Excessive algae growth. Algae rob fish and other pond creatures of the oxygen they need to survive. There are several reasons why algae growth occurs. It could be because there are too many fish, the water circulation is poor, or the ecosystem is imbalanced.

Unpleasant smell. The scent of a backyard pond should make you feel like you’re relaxing outdoors. But if it keeps you out of your yard, there could be a problem. An unpleasant smell can indicate dead fish, stagnant water, or algae accumulation.
